About my work
Furniture pieces are hand crafted and sustainably made with locally sourced materials, including domestic hardwoods sourced directly from the forests of Nipissing, Ontario. Designs are simple, blending function and style. Creations feature traditional and modern elements and techniques. Edges are gentle, soft to the feel and made with longevity in mind.
About me
Born in Toronto and raised in the Junction neighbourhood, on a small residential street that stopped at the CP rail tracks. The trainyard would form one of the foundational influences for artistic expression that began in my early teen years, as I discovered Pez, Ren, Virus, Daser, Dondi, Zephyr, Futura2000, Stash and others from the Toronto and New York graffiti scenes. Freight cars became itinerant Junction Joe canvases, transporting designs and letters, expression and communication thousands of kilometers across regions and borders. Painting led to close friends, community and joining crews like K.O.W and B.S.M.
In my early twenties I started painting canvases, focusing on abstract landscapes and dreamscapes, applying different techniques and materials to integrate texture, layers and depth. I explored going beyond two-dimensions, always keeping to my adlib approach. Throughout my twenties I trained in woodworking and fine custom cabinetry and began working with local Toronto designers. I continued with my art, which became a source of creative release, an outlet to decompress.
After many years focused on custom woodworking and fine cabinetry, I now am drawn back to my art and the creation of unique wood furniture pieces and multiform canvases. I bring materials together, drawing on diverse experiences and expertise, both professional and artistic, experimenting with line and form. Just as each freight car and wall, with its different shapes, surfaces and conditions, forced me to improvise and adapt to my environment, my art and furniture creations are improvised and inspired by found materials. I let the materials speak to me. The environment speaks to me. My work is the Junction of styles, eras, paths, forms.
